{"id":16,"date":"2009-03-02T01:51:38","date_gmt":"2009-03-02T00:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eggblog.invertedegg.com\/?p=16"},"modified":"2009-03-02T01:51:38","modified_gmt":"2009-03-02T00:51:38","slug":"creating-large-partitions-on-ubuntu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/eggblog.invertedegg.com\/?p=16","title":{"rendered":"Creating Large Partitions on Ubuntu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I had my server open to mount the WD (formerly external) drive, I threw in the two 1.5Tb (!) drives I&#8217;d brought back from the US &#8230; yep, time to start regularly backing up all the machines sitting around the house.<\/p>\n<p>GPartEd refused to create 1.5Tb partitions (kept getting the error &#8220;a partition cannot have a length of -1 sectors&#8221;).\u00c2\u00a0 Setting the disk label to GPT rather than MSDOS (<a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=854607&amp;page=2\" target=\"_blank\">as suggested here<\/a>) didn&#8217;t do the trick.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead, what worked was a combination of cfdisk and mke2fs.\u00c2\u00a0 In my case (assuming \/dev\/sde):<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">sudo cfdisk \/dev\/sde<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">sudo mke2fs -j \/dev\/sde1<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, to get the volume ID (for ID-based mounting, which is always best!):<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">sudo vol_id \/dev\/sde1<\/pre>\n<p>&#8230; and add it to the fstab.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While I had my server open to mount the WD (formerly external) drive, I threw in the two 1.5Tb (!) drives I&#8217;d brought back from the US &#8230; yep, time to start regularly backing up all the machines sitting around the house.
